Amnesty for illegals unfair to legal aliens
(http://www.post-trib.com/news/opinion/l ... 04.article)
June 11, 2009

I have read several excellent letters as to why we should not grant amnesty to illegal aliens, most of whom come from Mexico. Most notably are the ones written by Cheree Calabro and Sandra Alwin.

Those who misguidedly support amnesty for illegal aliens are unable to distinguish between a legal alien and an illegal alien. They seem not to understand what the term illegal means.

This brings up the good question: Why is it that the illegal aliens from Mexico are given preferential treatment while illegal aliens from other countries are deported? There are good reasons for having quotas on how many people can be allowed into this country legally. This allows the economy to absorb them, allows those seeking citizenship to assimilate

While some of my ancestors came from English-speaking countries, others came from France, Germany and Sweden. They all had to learn English, and they all assimilated themselves into the American lifestyle. They didn't demand the country learn French, German or Swedish. They learned English. And, most importantly, they came legally into this country.

My one grandmother immigrated from Canada. She became a U.S. citizen. The courthouse burned down along with all the records, so she went through the process a second time in order to be recognized as a U.S. citizen.

She was a good citizen. She didn't celebrate Victoria Day or Canada Day. She celebrated the Fourth of July instead. She was an American. I admire her for that.

The United States is a haven for legal immigrants wanting a better life, but those who misuse or ignore the proper steps to becoming a citizen should not have that privilege until they take the proper steps. Amnesty for illegal aliens is wrong and only encourages others to break the law.

Stand up against illegal immigration
| Sunday, June 28, 2009 | (5 comment(s))
Have you ever wondered how illegal aliens in America get jobs and government assistance without having a Social Security number? Illegal immigration is growing in our country, and here are a few problems being caused.

According to Numbers USA, there were about 7.7 million illegal aliens employed in the United States in 2008.

Employers need to clamp down on who they hire, and severe penalties should be imposed on those who hire illegal immigrants.

With illegal documents, a false name, and Social Security number, illegal immigrants can get access to health care and government assistance. If an illegal is put in prison, taxpayers pay more than $120 billion for the costs. The prison provides the basic essentials for the illegal immigrant to be in America.

Since many illegal immigrants do not have a Social Security number, they cannot contribute their share of taxes. Illegal aliens displaced American taxpayers at a cost of $133 billion of taxes, according to Harvard professor George Borjas.

Illegal immigrants are eventually going to overpopulate our country. Our borders need to be watched more sufficiently, and our employers need to clamp down and monitor who they hire.

America needs to stand up against illegal immigration.

DREAM Act would turn into a nightmare
Greg Serbon
Crown Point

Posted: Wednesday, August 19, 2009 12:00 am | No Comments Posted

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar supported amnesty in 2007, voted against making English the official language of America, and just voted to allow illegal immigrants to continue to obtain credit cards and to put a halt to finishing the border fence on the American-Mexican border.

Lugar received an F by NumbersUSA for his recent votes on illegal immigration.
The DREAM Act would allow children illegally in our country lawful permanent resident status and remove the federal ban on in-state tuition on illegal immigrants.

This bill includes any illegal immigrant 35 years and younger who has resided here illegally for five years or more. In most people's opinion, such a person is no longer a child.

There is no end on the application period to the DREAM Act, nor is there a limit to the number of illegal immigrants this bill would cover, including new illegal immigrants after the bill would go into effect.

The Obama administration is not enforcing our current immigration laws like the people wish, and all workplace immigration raids have been put on hold until further notice.

Under the DREAM Act, no one who files a petition for amnesty may be deported even if the application is fraudulently filed! As with any legislation proposed by our federal government, this bill is full of loopholes which would allow millions of illegal immigrants to remain or sneak into our country while existing immigration laws go unenforced.

Isn't it time an American-elected politician look out for constituents instead of some other country's people illegally here?

Obama did lie about abortions, illegal immigrants
• Story
• Discussion
Posted: Friday, September 18, 2009 12:00 am | (43) Comments

President Barack Obama did lie about illegal immigrants and abortions not going to be covered in the Obama health plan.

The Republicans submitted an amendment two times to explicitly insert wording in the proposed health plan to exclude illegal immigrants, and it required recipients to prove citizenship. And both times the Democrats voted it down!

On three separate occasions, the Republicans submitted an amendment to be explicit and exclude abortions from being covered in the Obama health plan. And guess what, the Democrats voted that down all three times. Can you explain why?

The answer is simple. When somebody challenges a law in court, and the law does not specifically exclude something, a judge can then rule that since it is not excluded, one can assume the law's intent is to include the item in question.

Remember Obama was a law professor at one time. Obama and the Democrats know that health coverage for illegal immigrants, or insurance coverage for abortions, will most likely be ruled by a liberal judge to be included in the intent of the law, since the law as written did not exclude them.

The end result will be that all of us will be paying for abortions and illegal immigrants health plans in the very near future. Pretty sneaky eh? Then the Democrats can say, well that is what a judge ruled and that was not what we intended.

So in the end the liberals will get their way and leave all of us holding the bag again.

Until economy rebounds, slow rate of immigration

Posted: Sunday, December 20, 2009 12:00 am

Why is neither party addressing the economic impact of immigration, both legal and illegal?
According to Pew Hispanic Center's 2009 report "A Portrait of Unauthorized Immigrants in the U.S.," there are 8.3 million illegal aliens currently working in the USA.

With the overall national unemployment rate hovering around 10 percent, there are 15.6 percent black Americans who are unemployed and 12.7 percent of American Hispanics.

To ensure Americans of all colors get hired instead of illegals, all employers should use E-Verify, the free government database that checks the work eligibility of all new hires by using DHS and SSA records.

Until the economy rebounds, we should also consider a moratorium on new work visas. The USA issues about 160,000 work visas per month. That means we need almost 2 million jobs per year just to employ the legal immigrants we are importing. Meanwhile, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 15.4 million Americans remain unemployed.

Making these two changes won't cost anything and will have immediate results. This is the kind of change we need, not rewards for illegals like free health care and pathways to citizenship.

State should implement E-Verify program

December 30, 2009

There has been a 100 percent increase in illegal immigration into Indiana since 2000. There also has been an even larger increase in limited-English-speaking students, from 17,194 to 45,885, from 2000 until 2009. In 2008, at an immigration summer study committee meeting, Lauren Harvey, the assistant director of the Office of English Language Learning and Migrant Education, testified the annual cost of public education for each student is $11,400.

Although we can't stop illegal-immigrant students from attending our schools, we can stop their parents from settling here. Indiana needs to implement the E-Verify program for all new employees statewide and to demand that all employers who hold state contracts E-Verify all current employees.

The E-Verify program is being used by 14 states in one form or another and is very cost-efficient. The E-Verify program is more than 97 percent accurate in keeping illegal immigrants out of our work force when enforced.

If (and only if) Indiana passes and enforces the E-Verify program, we will not only keep illegal immigrants from settling here, we will not have to educate their children, since they will not accompany their parents here illegally.

There are some hard choices to be made this year in Indianapolis. I don't think cutting school funding $300 million is a wise decision, especially from urban schools that currently lack much needed funds. Illegal immigration is a state problem caused by the federal government. It's now we are witnessing just how much illegal immigration is costing Indiana citizens as well as all Americans.

Immigration laws should be enforced, not ignored

Immigration policy should follow the example of taverns enforcing underage drinking laws. They are card-checked at the door. If they don't qualify by age, they are turned away until they are 21 years old. If they force their way in, they will be arrested. And if they are allowed in by the bar owner, he will pay a fine. Of course, there will be profiling. If a 25-year-old looks like a 20-year-old, he will be challenged to prove his age. That is verification, not discrimination.

Likewise, people entering the United States must follow a legal process. If they don't, they should not receive any rewards for breaking the law -- welfare, education, health care, housing or jobs. They should be sent back to their native countries and go to the end of the legal immigration line.

Orderly immigration can be a great benefit to America. Immigrants work harder and create more jobs than native Americans. They enrich our culture. But the illegals are a threat both to the legal immigrants and the taxpayers. They should not be granted amnesty. It would be grossly unfair and provoke civil unrest.

Is citizenship a privilege granted or a right taken? • Story
• Discussion
Posted: Monday, May 3, 2010 12:00 am | (7) Comments

Should American citizenship be a privilege granted or a right taken? Should immigration to America be based on laws or simply be the act of setting foot on our soil and staying?

Citizens and legal immigrants are suffering with this depressed economy, yet some congressmen are pushing to grant American citizenship to those who violate our sovereignty. Immigration Reform Bill is a misnomer as this legislation reforms no immigration policies but rather grants amnesty and citizenship to violators of our borders.

More than 15 million Americans are unemployed, yet America has 8.5 million illegal foreign workers. Drastically cut school budgets negatively affect American students, yet we continue to educate 4 million children of illegal immigrants. Since 1996, taxpayers pay for free hospital services for 20 million illegal immigrants.
In a near depression, our government meets the needs of illegal immigrants at taxpayers' expense. Amnesty will increase current costs and will unfairly burden future Americans.

Employment and Medicaid are incentives for illegal immigration. Remove them. It is a felony to hire an illegal immigrant. Penalize employers. The health care bill put 30 millions Americans on Medicaid. Remove Medicaid for illegal immigrants.

Use E-Verify for all employment, enforce our laws, remove incentives and secure our borders. Amnesty failed in 1986 and if granted with fail again.

Mexico's policies behind rush to come to U.S.

Why are millions of illegal Mexican immigrants continuing to stream across our southern border? The next few sentences answer that question.

Mexico is a socialist country controlled by politicians who are extremely wealthy and elitist, and are made corrupt by huge drug and prostitution deals. They have nationalized all their industries -- car, steel, banking, health care. They have suppressed capitalism and democracy. The result: no jobs, no freedom. (Does this sound familiar?)

These are Mexico's problems, to be resolved by Mexicans. Let those loud, strident, self-serving politicians and entertaining voices on both sides of the border criticizing Arizona's self-defense law direct their human abuse and rights issues to the country responsible -- Mexico.

This is the United States of America, where capitalism, democracy, immigrants who legally became and will become Americans are welcomed, nurtured and cherished.

U.S. needs enforcement, not another amnesty
Posted: Tuesday, May 11, 2010 12:00 am

Most of the American news media continue to combine illegal aliens and immigrants under one category. Most people like myself welcome legal immigrants into our country and believe illegal aliens should return to their country of origin.

Why is it the media have a hard time calling people who violate our immigration laws illegal aliens, which is their legal term? Why do the media combine the two, legal and illegal, into one category, then label Americans who want our immigration laws enforced as anti-immigrant?

The American people are fed up with the name calling, the misreporting and the inaction of our elected officials on issues of illegal immigration.

The April 18 Curbside Comment column showed that out of six people commenting, five stated that illegal aliens should not be in our work force. These five people aren't anti-immigrant only that they (illegal aliens) should follow the laws we have in place before they come here.

We have 15 million unemployed Americans and 8 million or more illegal aliens in our work force! Why are we spending billions on Homeland Security and not allowing them to do their jobs by removing these illegals?

President Barack Obama has mentioned he would look into granting amnesty to the 12 million or more illegal aliens in our country. We granted amnesty in 1986 but didn't enforce the immigration laws included in that legislation.

What America needs is 535 new members of Congress and 20 years of comprehensive immigration enforcement, not another amnesty.

What would Jesus do about illegal immigration?
Posted: Monday, May 24, 2010 12:00 am | No Comments Posted

Heaven is such a wonderful place that people are dying to get in. But there are no open borders in heaven. Although all are invited, not all will enter. Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber." (John 10:1)

The Christian God is a God of law and order. He gave us the 10 Commandments and placed governments in authority over us. If an illegal alien has to lie, cheat, covet and steal things that rightfully belong to his neighbor, he cannot say he is obeying either God's laws or man's. What kind of religious leader supports and excuses such unlawful behavior and calls it "compassionate?" That kind of religious leader is regularly hailed by this newspaper for supporting illegal actions.

WWJD? Would he solve this problem by changing the laws so that this criminal behavior is no longer a crime? No. Perhaps we should do what Jesus did when he stopped the mob from stoning the adulterous woman to death. He showed true compassion by sparing her life and telling her to comply with the law when he sent her away saying, "Go now and sin no more." (John 8:11)

Good pastor would tell illegal immigrants, 'Go, sin no more'

Posted: Saturday, June 26, 2010 12:00 am | No Comments Posted

I'd like to thank Elizabeth Vega and Tania J. Higareda for their replies to my letter "What Would Jesus Do About Illegal Immigration?" But my letter was directed at the religious leaders who use illegal immigrants as their willing pawns.

Those leaders use Scripture to say we must welcome the stranger no matter who gets hurt in the process. Welcoming the illegal immigrant should be compatible with the rest of Scripture and not in conflict with the Commandments.

You don't have to be a Christian, let alone a theologian, to understand that it's just plain wrong to rob your neighbor, Peter, in order to welcome the stranger, Paul.
Religious leaders who espouse social justice elevate illegal aliens to near sainthood because many are poor. But Leviticus 19:15 says "'Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.'"

I don't want to hurt illegal immigrants, and I cannot judge whether anyone is going to hell, but it's pretty obvious when they're breaking Commandments not to lie, steal, deceive, covet or defraud their neighbors.

Wouldn't a good pastor appeal to illegal aliens to "Go and sin no more"? Wouldn't a good pastor be able to figure out how to obey the laws and help poor illegal immigrants at the same time?

- Cheree Calabro, Valparaiso

Tania J. Higareda’s reply to my WWJD letter:
Immigration is a social issue, not a legal issue
May 31, 2010 | 12:00 am | (39) Comments

What would Jesus do about immigration?

The Jesus I learned about in my Catholic education was compassionate to those less fortunate. Certainly, Jesus would side with the hungry, poor and thirsty immigrant over someone who demonized this individual by calling him a sinner.

Does letter writer Cheree Calabro have the authority to know what defines a sin? She is small-minded to even speak of these things. Calabro says there are no open borders in heaven. Is every immigrant who pillaged their way here going to hell because they illegally seized lands?

Respect all life and open your eyes to reality.Immigration is a social issue, not a legal issue. Immigration occurs all over the world where people are used and abused for their labor. What would Jesus say about that? Educate yourself on social issues. They are not black and white.

There was a time where it was illegal for blacks and whites to sit together.

Often, in a system like ours, there exists a brutal market for cheap labor. If you cared what Jesus thought, you would look at the facts and not judge people.

Elizabeth Vega’s letter:
Next time, please tell the whole story on 'sin no more'
May 28, 2010 | 12:00 am | (19) Comments

I would like to respond to Cheree Calabro's letter. While using a Bible passage to prove a point, Calabro sadly left out a huge part of the story. Yes, Jesus told the adulterous woman to "go, and sin no more." What is left out is key here: Jesus told the group holding stones that whoever is without sin, let him to be the first to throw.

If you apply this passage to illegal immigration, who are those holding the stones? Those of us who patronize restaurants -- after church -- that hire illegal immigrants and who buy cheap fruit picked by illegal immigrants. They are the inept congresspeople who know there is a serious problem, but cannot move because they fear losing votes.

They refuse to move on either side's behalf; those who would like a real path to true citizenship (and are not drug smugglers and thugs) and those who want the borders more secure. Let's not forget the business owners, too.

Finally, one by one, those holding the stones began to drop them on the ground and walk away. Jesus asked the woman, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?" The woman said "no". "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and sin no more." Next time, please tell the whole story.

E-verify should be passed to make more jobs

We must remember the United States is in a long, jobless recovery and, as a debtor nation with such high un- and under-employment, we need Congress immediately to make mandatory E-Verify the law, just as it did for government contract work.

E-Verify will find the businesses hiring illegal immigrants from every county, so it is a non-racist law. To stop illegals and drugs from continuing to come in, build a three-tier fence all along our southern border, giving veterans preference in hiring and putting construction workers to work. We can put FEMA housing trailers on the border to house them.

To stop unjust eligibility for welfare, at least one parent should be a citizen for their children born in United States to be citizens. There needs to be an end to taxpayers having to pay for illegals.

This will start the self-deportation of illegals that will enable the U.S. veterans, citizens and legal businesses to get back to work now.

How can anyone in Congress be against its own citizens, especially when we have always had a legal immigration program, as well as a temporary farm workers program?

I don't know if illegals can vote, but this veteran can.

So, see you at the polls this November.

George H. Christos

No amnesty for illegals
Comments 81 | Recommend 216

I am a second-generation American. My grandparents came to the United States legally. They suffered great hardships in Europe and wanted to make a better life for themselves and for future generations. They were all hard-working people who never asked anyone to support them in their choices. They left family behind that they never saw again to pursue the dream of America.

They became American citizens, raised their children, worked and supported themselves. When we were children and they would speak their home language, we would ask them to teach us and they refused, saying, “You are Americans and you should speak the language of America.” They worked hard to learn English and be good American citizens.

My entire family has been involved in military service. My father served in the Navy during WWII. My brother served in the Army during Vietnam. My husband is a retired Marine and my son-in-law is currently serving in Afghanistan with the Marine Corps. We were raised to give back to the country, not take or disobey the laws.

Now we have millions of people who have entered this country illegally. Whatever their reasons, the fact still remains that their first action is illegal. It is a slap in the face to every immigrant who worked hard and followed the law that they would consider amnesty for these lawbreakers.

I have no issue with legal immigration. It is what makes this country strong and good. But illegal is illegal, whether it is immigration, stealing or not obeying any other law that is in place. Illegal should not be tolerated or forgiven.

I wholeheartedly support Gov. Jan Brewer in her attempts to secure the Arizona border and protect the way of life that legal citizens have a right to expect.

Arizona's immigration law is less strict than federal law
Posted: Monday, June 7, 2010 12:00 am | (32) Comments

Response to the May 23 letter by Lois Broughton of Valparaiso: Have you read the Arizona immigration law? Have you compared it with our federal immigration laws? Arizona's law mirrors our federal law. In fact, our federal law is even stricter than Arizona's law, which prohibits racial profiling.

Therefore, if you are not breaking any laws in Arizona, you cannot be questioned about their citizenship status.

The letter stated, "What Arizona has done is appalling." No, it's appalling that President Barack Obama and past presidents (George W. Bush and Bill Clinton) violated their oath of office by refusing to enforce our immigration laws and secure our borders. It's appalling that an Arizona rancher, while tending to his own property, was murdered by an illegal immigrant. It's appalling that Phoenix has become the kidnapping capital of our country. It's appalling that an illegal immigrant arrested for rape in Edmonds, Wash., had previously been deported nine times!

Do you have any compassion for the families of these murder and rape victims? This is not about racial hatred. It's about the safety and welfare of your family.

Law-abiding citizens in Arizona are crying out for help. We are a nation of laws, and Arizona expects Obama to live up to the oath he took on Jan. 20, 2009.

Arizona governor deserves praise, not boycotts

Boycotts?

Now what has it come to in these United States of America?

We finally find a brave and patriotic governor who does not believe in broken laws. Neither is she afraid of elite organizations who question the enforcement of state laws and federal laws.

The organizations and individuals who do not want our immigration laws enforced are not only unpatriotic but also very destructive to our very governments from which they enjoy unbelievable benefits, more than any other nation in the world -- hypocrites, all of them! Sports moguls and high-end organizations who hold conferences and conventions in Arizona are attempting to boycott the state and cause economic problems. Shame on all of you who would participate in such a movement as this.

The drug cartels are flourishing, illegal aliens are benefiting from our hospitals, schools and employers. The employers should be held responsible for their selfish reasons for encouraging the invasion of our country.

These who boycott should be boycotted themselves. They are just as guilty as any other type of lawbreakers.

Congratulations to the governor of Arizona -- a gutsy woman who knows the law. She also is aware of the breakdown of the economy in her state, not to mention the degree of criminal activity, largely by the illegal aliens, that must be stopped.

The federal government has been looking away from this problem for years and years. Does it take a "little woman" shake up the system? Yes, it does! The legislative and executive branches of our government can take a lesson from this exceptional lady.
