“Illegal Alien Relief Act”
Be it ordained by the Council of the City of Lafayette, Indiana as follows:
Section 1 – Title
This chapter shall be known as the “Illegal Alien Relief Act”
Section 2 – Declaration of Purpose
The People of the City of Lafayette, Indiana declare:
A. That because illegal immigration leads to higher crime rates, higher costs for law enforcement, public education, health care, and social services, and diminishes the overall quality of life;
B. Therefore, the City of Lafayette is mandated by the People of Lafayette to reduce the nuisance of illegal aliens by prohibiting and punishing the acts, policies, people, and businesses that aid and abet illegal aliens.
Section 3 – Business Permits, Contracts, or Grants
Any business entity that aids and abets or employs an illegal alien shall have its business permit revoked, be denied approval or renewal of a business permit, and be ineligible for city contracts or grants for a period of not less than five years from its last offense.
A. Aiding and abetting shall include the hiring or attempted hiring of illegal aliens and the renting or leasing of property to illegal aliens.
B. Any act that aids and abets illegal aliens within the United States, not just within the City of Lafayette, will constitute a violation.

Section 4 – Renting to Illegal aliens
A. Illegal aliens are prohibited from leasing or renting property. Any property owner or renter/tenant/lessee in control of property who knowingly allows an illegal alien to use, rent, or lease property shall be in violation of this section.
B. Any person or entity that violates this section shall be subject to a fine of not less that $5,000. The City of Lafayette is empowered to place a lien on the property involved to enforce this section
Section 5 – English Only
A. The City of Lafayette declares that English is the official language of the City.
B. Unless specifically mandated by the federal government or the State of Indiana, all official city business, forms, documents, signage, telecommunications, and electronic communications will be conducted in, written in, or utilize English only.
Section 7 – Severability
If any part of this Chapter is in conflict or inconsistent with applicable provisions of federal or state statutes, or is otherwise held invalid or unenforceable by any court of competent jurisdiction, such part shall be suspended and superseded by such applicable laws or regulations. The remainder of this Chapter shall not be affected thereby.
