A Visit From Amanda
Imagine you wake up one morning, and there’s a woman in the kitchen ironing. You’ve never seen her before. You say, “Who are you, what are you doing in my house?”
The woman answers, “You don’t know me, my name is Amanda. While you were sleeping, I did the laundry, and now I’m ironing. I’ll fix breakfast while you get ready for work, OK?
You say, “I don’t know what you want, Amanda, but I want you to leave now, or I’ll call the police.”
Amanda looks hurt. She says, “But ma’am, my son and I will work hard for you. I will cook and clean. He will do the yard work and all the jobs that you hate to do. All we demand is that you let us stay and put us on your family’s health insurance.”
You say again, “Please leave now.”
Amanda says, “If you make me leave, I will tell my friends that you are a selfish racist, and we will picket outside. I am a hard worker and honest, except for the fact that I broke into your house last night. I have a right to stay here because your house is so much nicer than ours.
You grab your cell phone and press 911. To be continued.
