HAMMOND |
A Whiting man who applied for a job with a north side fabrication shop this week was told that he already worked there -- or rather, an illegal immigrant using his identity already worked there.Agents with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement office arrested a 39-year-old Hammond resident at the job site Wednesday on immigration charges.
The 38-year-old Whiting man already suspected that someone was using his name for employment purposes when questions were raised by the Internal Revenue Service over discrepancies with his income tax returns.
Turns out he had been working at an East Chicago chemical plant at the same time as the suspect two years ago when his wallet -- along with his Social Security card and other identification -- disappeared.
A manager at the West 143rd Street metal shop told police that the suspected identity thief had provided the employer with an ID and Social Security card in the name of the Whiting man.
The victim said Thursday afternoon that he didn't know yet if he has gotten the job, but he knew that there was an opening at the company.
