SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A northern Indiana company and its president have pleaded guilty to knowingly hiring illegal workers.
Janco Composites, which makes fiberglass tubing at its plant in Mishawaka, agreed in U.S. District Court in South Bend on Monday to pay a fine of $210,000. Company president Douglas Jaques agreed to pay a $30,000 fine and to one year of probation.
Sentencing was set for April 22.
According to court documents, Jaques admitted he knew that one employee helped illegal workers complete employment forms and that Janco received letters from the government that employees' Social Security numbers did not match names linked to them.
The government said Janco continued employing illegals until the plant was raided in March 2007, when 36 workers suspected of being undocumented aliens were arrested.
