EAST CHICAGO | Gang affiliations may have led to a fatal shooting Sunday afternoon in East Chicago, authorities said Monday.
Police arrested a "person of interest" shortly after the shooting of Henry Gonzalez, 22, of Hammond, but no one had been charged Monday afternoon, authorities said. Investigators had not established a "clear motive" in the shooting Monday, said city spokesman Damian Rico. Police still were questioning the person Monday afternoon, Rico said.
Gonzalez was shot about 1:40 p.m. Sunday on a sidewalk in the 4300 block of Magoun Avenue. The area is a block west of Indianapolis Boulevard, the route of Sunday's Puerto Rican parade.
Court papers and public records indicate the slain man was charged in connection with the gunfight that killed 7-year-old Angel Silvas in May 2007. Gonzalez was charged with assisting a criminal and a misdemeanor count of carrying a handgun without a license in that case. The charges -- along with a murder charge against another man -- were dropped in March. During that investigation, police said Gonzalez was a member of the Latin Kings street gang.
Gonzalez died about 2:20 p.m. of a gunshot wound to the body at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, according to a spokesman for the Lake County coroner's office.
