Subject: Reasons to vote for SB213I hope you will consider the following information when considering SB 213.
Passing SB 213 will improve economic opportunities for American-born minorities and legal immigrants. The Bureau of Labor Statistics pegs the unemployment rate at 16.5% for Blacks and 12.6% for Hispanics while the unemployment rate for Whites has dropped to 8.7%. [1]
Retired Catholic priest, Fr. P.J. Bascio, has written a book, “On the Immorality of Illegal Immigration.”[2] He served the church in Harlem for many years. After retiring, he returned to Harlem where he noticed that Black workers had been replaced by foreign ones. [3]
The BLS estimates there are over 15 million unemployed and discouraged workers. [4]
The Pew Research Center has estimated there were 8.3 million “undocumented” holding jobs in the USA in 2008. [5]
Indiana had over 301,000 unemployed workers in December of 2009. [6]
Pew estimates there are between 100,000 and 200,000 “unauthorized” immigrants in Indiana. [7]
Whatever the actual numbers are, I think we can agree that all available jobs must go to legal workers especially in these tough economic times. Using E-verify, as required by SB 213, takes a positive step in that direction. I hope you will support legal workers by voting for SB 213.
