FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sen. Delph: Illegal Immigration costs Hoosiers
‘millions’ annually on health care, education

(STATEHOUSE) – Hoosier taxpayers spend “millions” of dollars each year on health care and education costs for illegal immigrants, according to experts who testified before the final meeting of the Interim Study Committee on Immigration Issues.

“Testimony given during today’s meeting clearly shows the high cost of illegal immigration for Hoosier taxpayers,” said Sen. Mike Delph (R-Carmel). “It is estimated Hoosier taxpayers spent $206 million on education alone in 2006 and that cost is expected to increase to $400 million per year by 2010, according to Carl Little, director of government relations for the Federation for American Immigration Reform. We have to put a stop to this to protect Hoosier taxpayers and enforce the rule of law in our state.”

Delph asked Tim Kennedy of the Indiana Hospital Association if illegal immigration poses “a real and significant cost to health care in Indiana. Kennedy said “yes.”

According to Kennedy, an informal survey of four hospitals in select counties found that combined they spent an estimated $2.7 million per year to care for uninsured illegal immigrants. These hospitals represent only a small fraction of the 120 hospitals in Indiana.

“If we multiply these health care costs across the state, insured Hoosiers taxpayers are absorbing millions of dollars through higher insurance premiums,” Delph said.

During the past Indiana legislative session, Delph authored Senate Bill 335, which was aimed at punishing those who harbor, transport or employ illegal immigrants. SB 335 did not pass, but the Interim Study Committee on Immigration Issues was created to study the issue further.
