Get ready! The members of the Immigration Study Committee should be named early next week. According to Sen. David Long's office, the meeting to name the committee members will take place on June. 24th.

Meanwhile, State Rep. Scott Pelath (D-Michigan City) has been named as co-chair.
So far, this has only made the news in a couple of NW Indiana newspapers.

Michigan City Dem to co-chair immigration panel

INDIANAPOLIS | State Rep. Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City, will co-chair a legislative panel charged with studying the politically charged issue of illegal immigration.

"On no other issue are the gaps between political rhetoric, strong emotions and reliable information more apparent," Pelath said Thursday in a statement. "What is obvious, however, is that we are a nation of immigrants, and most Americans sense our national immigration system isn't serving anyone very well."

Pelath, a top lieutenant of Democratic House Speaker Pat Bauer, also leads the House Rules Committee, which has been responsible for burying Republican-led efforts to write a ban on same-sex marriage into the Indiana Constitution. State law already forbids gay marriage.

Republican Senate President David Long, R-Fort Wayne, last month pushed for creation of the Interim Study Committee on Immigration Issues. He has yet to name his co-chair to the House-Senate panel, which will begin meeting later this summer.

Efforts to create a three-tiered punishment system for Indiana companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants fizzled in the final days of this year's legislative session, when the Democratic-led House and Republican-dominated Senate could not agree on the details.

"Because Washington has sidestepped immigration reform, many have demanded that state governments step up and assume the role of leadership," Pelath said. "However, it is unclear whether a single state like Indiana has the power, capabilities or resources needed to act in a meaningful way. This committee will provide a means to see what can be done at the state level or whether this is truly a federal issue."

Pelath to serve on interim committee

Post-Tribune staff report

Local state Rep. Scott Pelath soon will play a role in finding answers to Indiana's contentious debate on illegal immigration.

Pelath, D-Michigan City, has been chosen as a co-chairman of the joint House-Senate Interim Study Committee on Immigration Issues.

The committee, which meets this summer, is slated to complete its work before the 2009 session of the Indiana General Assembly so it can present recommendations to the full Legislature.

Pelath promised to consider what role local officials should play, as well as how local businesses lure illegal immigrants into the state with promises of low-paying jobs.
"We cannot discuss one side of this issue without taking the time to look at the other," he said in a statement.

Pelath was selected by Indiana House Speaker Patrick Bauer, D-South Bend. The committee will be co-chaired by a member of the Indiana Senate who has yet to be announced by Senate President Pro Tempore David Long, R-Fort Wayne.

The state Legislature considered various measures this spring to allow local law enforcement agencies to enforce federal immigration laws, but the controversial issue fell short of passage.
