Friday, March 14, 2008 Update

It's over for this year, folks! We gave it our best shot but couldn't overcome the corrupt corporate influences of big business. I never realized how many twists and turns a bill could take! I never realized the power one or two key politicians hold. Even though the majority of the General Assembly voted for similar versions of the bill, in the end, a couple of conferees killed it.

We learned a lot from this experience and we'll be back!!! The majority of Hoosiers and the majority of legislators want illegal immigration addressed. We need to get rid of a few legislators like Rep. Mike Murphy.

I must say, you all did a superb job of emailing and calling!!! Many of you went the extra mile to attend the hearings and press conference. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!!! Next year we might have to demonstrate in front of the Governor's office. That's what the property tax people did, and they got their bill passed.

In case you haven't seen it yet, here's the link to the Indy Star's story on the bill's demise:

AT LAST!!! Speaker Bauer has named the House Conferees on SB 345. They are Rep. Pelath-D and Rep. Koch-R, both of whom have supported the legislation in the past.

The Conferees and advisors will now meet this afternoon to hash out the final details. Senator Delph-R and Representative Tincher-D anticipated a last-minute meeting and already agreed upon the Delph/Tincher compromise language for the bills. Additional changes can still be made. If the Conferees sign off on the Conference Report containing illegal immigraiton language, it then goes to both the Senate and House for final votes on Friday, 3/14/08, the last day of this session. From there, the last hurdle is the Governor's desk.

FREE EMAIL:

Thank you for your past support of Senator Delph's illegal immigration bill. Please support the Delph/Tincher language as part of SB 345 and/or HB 1219.

I am counting on you, in your role as Conferee, to get this crucial piece of legislation to the full House and Senate for a final vote on March 14, 2008.

Passing this legislation will go a long way towards reducing unnecessary government spending and towards restoring the rule of law.

Sincerely,

(your name)

Speaker appoints conferees on immigration bill
By Dan McFeely

March 13, 2008

House Speaker B. Patrick Bauer, D-South Bend, has appointed conferees to consider the illegal immigration bill, Senate Bill 345, in a conference committee.

That committee -- which will attempt to resolve differences between the House and Senate versions of the proposed crackdown on employers who hire illegal immigrants -- would need to agree on compromise language and pass the bill for consideration by both chambers and then the governor.

All within the next 36 hours.

The action comes after more than a week of silence on the bill, leaving many to believe the bill was close to death.

This morning, Bauer appointed Rep. Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City, and Rep. Eric Koch, R-Bedford, as conferees on the bill. Koch was one of several representatives to attend a press conference on Tuesday in support of the bill.

Bauer also appointed the following House advisors -- Reps. Vern Tincher, D-Riley, Mara-Candelaria-Reardon, D-Munster, Mike Murphy, R-Indianapolis, Eric Turner, R-Marion, and Nancy Dembowski, D-Knox.

On the Senate side, Sen. Tom Weatherwax, R-Logansport, is the chairman and is joined by Sen. Jim Arnold, D-Laporte, as conferees. Senate advisors include Sens. Mike Delph, R-Carmel (the original author of the legislation), Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn, Lindel Hume, D-Princeton, and Robert Deig, D-Mount Vernon.

No meeting time or location has been set.

Pelath voted for the immigration bill, SB 345, when it was in the House, as did Koch. Among the advisers, Tincher, Turner and Dembowski voted yes, while Candelaria-Reardon and Murphy voted no.

All of the Senate conferees and advisers voted for the immigration bill, which was in Senate Bill 335 when it passed the Senate.
