FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Delph Blasts Hispanic Newspaper
Calls on community leadership to denounce tactics and cancel subscriptions

(STATEHOUSE) – Sen. Mike Delph (R-Carmel) denounced a growing local newspaper El Indy Latino for referring to him in a headline as “El Diablo,” translated in English as the devil.

Delph is the author of Senate Bill 335, which would crack down on illegal immigration in Indiana. The bill has been widely criticized by members of the Hispanic and Latino community.

“This type of inflammatory rhetoric is beyond the dignity of public debate, much less as a newspaper headline,” Delph said. “Most Hoosiers, including many in the Hispanic community want the problem of illegal immigration solved in the State of Indiana once and for all. I am asking the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Univision and other community leaders to denounce these tactics. It’s time for all Hoosiers, including the Hispanic community, to stand for the rule of law as opposed to shielding those who break the law.”

Delph’s bill targets employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants in Indiana by allowing the attorney general’s office and local prosecutors to investigate written complaints of such practices. An employer is who is found to have violated the law would be punished based on a three-tier system:

• the employers first offense would be a warning;
• if they have a second offense in a ten-year span, the court could suspend their license to do business in Indiana for ten days; and
• if they then have a third offense in a ten-year span, the court could revoke their license to do business in Indiana.
