Please forgive my exuberance! The NW Indiana newspapers virtually ignored the immigration bill through out the process.

Even though the bill passed, this is not the end of the political process. It still has to go through conference committee where it can be changed for better or worse.

Don't relax yet!

Your continued calls and emails to your reps, senators, the governor and party leadership will help keep things on track. Both sides have been playing games with this. If you don't stay engaged and interested, they may still do something to kill the bill.

INDIANAPOLIS — Employers could lose their business licenses for hiring illegal immigrants under a bill that passed the House after a spirited debate Thursday.

The House voted 66-33 to pass Senate Bill 345, which requires employers to electronically verify the immigration status of all new hires through a federal database.

Business owners found to have hired people the database determines are not legally in the U.S. would first receive a warning, but could permanently lose their business licenses for a third offense in five years.

Rep. Mara Candelaria Reardon, D-Munster, attacked the effectiveness of the legislation in a statement that drew applause from Democrats.

“We must not only appear to be doing something because it is an election year,” Candelaria Reardon said.

She contended the electronic verification system is rife with errors that could cost legal workers their jobs.

But the bill’s author, Rep. Vern Tincher, D-Riley, argued Indiana needs a law to address the federal immigration standards that are not being enforced.

Among Northwest Indiana’s delegation, Republicans Don Lehe and Ed Soliday voted for the measure. They were joined by Democrats Tom Dermody, Scott Pelath and Shelli VanDenburgh.

Democrats Candelaria Reardon, Charlie Brown, Chet Dobis, Earl Harris, Linda Lawson, Vernon Smith and Dan Stevenson voted against it.

The bill will now head to conference committee for further negotiations.
