NEW Attachment Added 7/1/10. Scroll down to the bottom of this post to access the attachment. It is a Resolution supporting Arizona's immigration enforcement law. Print it out or email it as an attachment to the Bloomington City Council (or any city or county council) for their use.

BACKGROUND:
On May 17,2010 the Mayor,City Clerk and Bloomington Council members drafted a letter condemning the new Arizona law SB1070, which included a boycott of Arizona by the city of Bloomington.This story got some attention in a wishtv8 story on June 03,2010. Here is a link as information: http://www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/politics ... ration-law

You can read the letter here at this link: http://bloomington.in.gov/media/media/a ... f/7106.pdf

We need to let the Bloomington Mayor and Council hear from us,letting them know boycotts can be a two way street. It would be great to contact others connected with the city so they will know the Council's action has adverse consequences on the City of Bloomington. It is my understanding that a majority of the council works at IU.

To Bloomington administrators:

I want to express my displeasure with the recent vote of the Bloomington City Council and Mayor concerning the passage of SB1070 in Arizona and their letter sent to Governor Brewer, Senator McCain and Senator Kyle.

They misrepresent what the law actually does in their letter, saying it legalizes racial profiling. SB1070 is the same as the federal law and even goes further to prevent racial profiling. Why did the Bloomington Council and Mayor not write a letter to the federal government condemning their law? They stated condemnation was widespread against the new law. This is certainly not true.In Indiana the approval for the new law is 63%.

The letter goes on to threaten a boycott of Arizona and explore discontinuing contracts with companies in the state. I find this letter to be a slap in the face of citizens that believe in the rule of law. I disagree strongly with the actions of the Bloomington Mayor and Council on this issue.

Until the Bloomington Council rescinds their letter I will not be doing business in Bloomington and will also encourage many others to the same. One thing these outspoken city governments need to realize is that boycotts are a two way street. I hope everyone with any influence over the Council will let them know their actions don't reflect the opinions of most Hoosiers and will harm the city of Bloomington.

Sincerely,

Here's what the Resolution looks like:

Whereas, the City of _____________, Indiana believes strongly in the integrity of the borders of the United States and that the federal government has a duty to protect these borders, including regulating the numbers and the qualifications for entrance into the country;

Whereas, the Federal Government has failed in its role to protect our borders from an unprecedented number of illegal aliens entering our country;
Whereas, the State of Arizona is in the unusual and unfortunate position of enduring the vast majority of illegal border crossings and suffering from the narcotics trafficking into our country;

Whereas, the Federation for American Immigration Reform estimates that 500,000 illegal aliens live in the State of Arizona;

Whereas, after considering both Fiscal Costs and Fiscal Revenues, it is estimated that illegal aliens cost the State over $2.7 billion annually,

Whereas, the State of Arizona, has passed Arizona Senate Bill 1070, which was amended by Arizona House Bill 2162, to assist the federal government in enforcing the nation’s immigration laws;

Whereas, the Arizona law requires its law enforcement officers to verify a person’s immigration status with the federal government, if the officer has a reasonable suspicion to believe that the person is unlawfully in the United States;

Whereas the Arizona law expressly prohibits the use of racial profiling and is designed to help enforce the nation’s immigration laws in a way that does not violate anyone’s civil rights;

Whereas the Arizona law requires aliens to register for and carry documents with them that the federal already requires such aliens to possess and does not require United States citizens to carry any documents;

Be it Resolved, that the citizens and [City Council] of __________, Indiana hereby affirm their support for the people of Arizona who must endure the direct consequences of our federal government’s failure in protecting our borders. The [xxxxx] further applauds and thanks Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and the Arizona State Legislature for protecting its citizens when the Federal Government has refused to do so.
