(FROM THE ARTICLE: Two groups that oppose immigration reform held their own rally Tuesday. The Chicago Minuteman Project and the Illinois Black Coalition Against Illegal Immigration rallied outside the office of Senate President Emil Jones. They are against a bill that would allow illegal immigrants to get driving certificates. "I respect the fact that people want to come into this great country of ours, and this is not about any race bashing of any ethnic group, it's about there's a process to come into this country," said Rev. Anthony Williams, Illinois Black Coalition Against Illegal Immigration. Williams says there is particular concern in the black community about the effect illegal immigration has on jobs there. Right now, federal lawmakers can't agree on an immigration reform bill. The Senate is working on its own version, while the House is considering another. Both bills are bipartisan. The main sticking point is the issue of granting citizenship to illegal immigrants already in the country. President Bush and Democratic leaders in Congress have both said they support a form of legalization. But some Republicans call that "amnesty" and say it would reward people for breaking immigration laws to get into the US.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: No counter-rally was planned. Critics of illegal immigration instead watched from afar, confident rallies like this ultimately create a backlash that helps their cause. “Some people would like to say illegal immigration is a single issue, but it’s affecting so many areas,” said Rosanna Pulido, of the Illinois Minuteman Project. With the Illinois Senate expected to vote this week on a bill that would give driving certificates to undocumented immigrants, a group rallied against the measure Tuesday outside the South Side office of Senate President Emil Jones, a Chicago Democrat. In Cook County, board members failed to pass a bid that would have entitled every county resident to “fair and equal” access to county services, regardless of their legal status. The resolution would have barred police officers and county health workers from asking whether an immigrant is undocumented. . . The protest — and resulting media coverage — drew the disdain of groups pushing for tougher immigration laws and stronger enforcement. They contend the demonstration mocks the country’s laws. “We feel we don’t need to do anything because they are stating the case for us,” said Ken Arnold of Gurnee, a member of the Chicago Minuteman Project. “How dare people break into our country and then demand our rights as U.S. citizens?” )
-- Biesada: “A lot of people don’t realize what’s going on with this problem...(The march) is backfiring on them.” Pulido: “Our borders are being invaded...We need to educate people. That’s the bottom line.”

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Chicago crowd included the diehard, the offbeat and the angry. One man wore speakers around his neck that constantly blared a car alarm. Another blew into a conch shell to answer chants. Others spent part of the march doing the wave. Within the moving mass was a trailer carrying a 12-foot-tall crucified Statue of Liberty made of foam, cardboard and Bondo, the auto repair putty. A few people burned in effigy a military figure emblazoned with the president's name; others nearly brought the procession to a halt as they railed against two anti-illegal immigration demonstrators who then were surrounded by some 40 police officers for protection. In Grant Park, speaker after speaker addressed the crowd. Among them was Mayor Daley, who said, "We welcome immigrants to our great city." He then told the cheering crowd to raise their flags and remain strong. "Stand up. Be not afraid of those who oppose us," said the mayor, referring to immigrants as "our past, our present and our future.'')

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rick Biesada, of the Chicago Minuteman Project, said illegal immigrants had broken the law and compromised national security. “These people broke the laws,” Biesada said of illegal immigrants. “Those laws protect American citizens.” Current laws are adequate but are not enforced, he added.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Opponents argued the state is overstepping its authority by telling every Illinois business how it must operate. Customers should be allowed to vote with their dollars and stay away from businesses that permit smoking if that's what they want to do, critics said. If smoking must be regulated, it should be done by individual cities. "That's local control. That's the way government works best," said Rep. Mike Bost, R-Murphysboro.)

Suggested questions for Illinois political reporters to ask Illinois Republican Party Chairman Andy McKenna - Dave Diersen
www.gopillinois.com
-- Illinois Republicans are outraged that Illinois Democrats are advancing legislation in Springfield that conflicts with Republican principles, but some Illinois Republicans are beyond outraged that some legislators who ran as Republicans are helping advance that anti-Republican legislation. What do you say to the Illinois Republicans who are outraged? What do you say to those Illinois Republicans who are beyond outraged?
-- What do you say to Illinois Republicans who like to see you and other Illinois Republican Party (IRP) leaders, Illinois Republican elected officials, and Illinois Republican candidates hold more press conferences and issue more press releases that a) express outrage about recent Illinois Democrat and Illinois RINO actions and b) call for specific actions to be taken?
-- What is the IRP's financial condition? How much has the IRP raised so far this year? Who were the major donors and how much did each of them donate? How much has the IRP spent this year - how much has the IRP spent on salaries, rent, etc., this year? What are the IRP's financial assets? What are the IRP's financial liabilities? What is the IRP's net worth?
-- Do you agree with those who believe that the IRP Executive Director should be someone who has demonstrated his/her ability as the Executive Director of the Republican party in another state and has acquired a national reputation for excellence? What are you doing to recruit a new IRP Executive Director? What salary can the IRP afford to pay him/her?
-- What are you doing to prompt IRP National Committeeman Bob Kjellander to comply with the IRP State Central Committee's (SCC) motion calling for him to resign?
-- What do you say to those, including Senator Chris Lauzen, who want you to call a special convention of the IRP?
-- What are you doing to encourage Republican presidential candidates to campaign in Illinois?
-- What are you doing to encourage viable candidates to run against Bean and Durbin?
-- What will be on the agenda for the May 19 SCC meeting in Champaign? What will be discussed in executive session?
-- What do you say to those who want the SCC to rescind the action it took against the Republican Assembly of Lake County and to apologize?
-- By your actions, you have made it clear that you oppose returning to direct election of SCC members. Why do you oppose returning to direct election of SCC members?
-- Political parties exist to advance their platforms. The Republican Party platform is conservative and the Democrat Party platform is liberal. RINO candidates, RINO elected officials, and RINO party leaders outrageously reject most if not all of the planks in the Republican Platform. Tragically, for decades, Illinois RINOs have dominated the IRP. Outrageously, Illinois RINOs blame Illinois Republicans for the damage that Illinois RINOs have done to the IRP. Many Illinois RINOs are under criminal investigation, are soon to be indicted, have been indicted, are awaiting trial, have plead guilty, have been found guilty, or are in jail. By definition, if you do not have respect for the rule of law, you are not a Republican. Many Illinois RINOs have demonstrated that they do not have respect for the rule of law. Many Illinois RINOs have demonstrated that they accept the Democrat belief that the "end justifies the means." Illinois Republicans accept the IRP platform, they want Illinois Republican elected officials to advance that platform, they believe Illinois Republican elected officials should not do anything that promotes abortion, promiscuity, homosexual activity, out-of-wedlock births, illegal immigration, speaking languages other than English, government dependency, race based preference giving, gender based preference giving, etc. What are you doing to stop Illinois RINOs from blaming Illinois Republicans for damage that Illinois RINOs have done to the IRP? What are you doing to stop Illinois RINOs from demonizing Illinois Republicans? What are you doing to stop Illinois RINOs from dominating the IRP?
